20 000 pupils fell pregnant last year

Despite the various school-based educational programmes aimed at discouraging pupils from engaging in unprotected sex, the Department of Basic Education remains concerned about teenage pregnancy.

A reply to a DA parliamentary question revealed that 20 000 pupils in primary and secondary school fell pregnant last year. Speaking to The Citizen yesterday, department spokesman Elijah Mhlanga said the figure was worrying. “It seems communities (parents and gurdians), are failing children despite the fact that we have school-based programmes, including in the curriculum aimed at discouraging pupils from having unprotected sex.

“In life orientation, we teach children openly about how the body works and how they should protect themselves. That message must also come from parents, and not only from schools,” he said. Mhlanga said communities needed to take a stand against teenage pregnancy.

In the event a school-going child falls pregnant, he said all the department can do is ensure that the pupil finishes schooling. Responding to a question on whether there are policies in place to avert teenage pregnancy, Mhlanga said: “The pregnancies are a result of what happens in the home, the street, the communities and we only record it because it affects young people. “You don’t need a policy for parenting, you don’t need a policy for self-respect, you don’t need a policy to know that you are destroying a life of a child by making them pregnant and even infecting them with viruses.”

An official from the Equal Education Law Centre said pregnant pupils cannot be chased away from school. “If she stays at home, the school will have to provide her with a catch-up programme.” The centre is currently conducting broad-based research on the subject.

Diamond’s Girlfriend Zari To Be Arrested For Po**n Trafficking..!!..!!

Ugandan Police have threatened to arrest city socialite Zarinah Ntale, popularly known as Zari, after she jumped police bond given to her when she was charged with trafficking por**n.

The warning comes as detectives widen investigations into trafficking of s3x videos, sharing them through social media platforms, including Facebook and Whatsapp.

Zari’s s3x videos were circulated on social media last month. This prompted the police to interrogate her on charges of trafficking in pornography before she was released on police bond. But when she left for South Africa, she never reported back to police.

S3X TAPES

Police spokesman Fred Enanga confirmed that they are looking for Zari with the aim of arresting her.

“She should report to police with immediate effect before we look for her. We need to talk to her about the videos that were circulated on social media,”
SOMALIA'S AL-SHABAB ATTACKS ARMY HOTEL IN BULO-BURDE.

SOMALIA'S AL-SHABAB ATTACKS ARMY HOTEL IN BULO-BURDE.

Somali Islamist fighters have attacked a hotel in a strategic central town the militants lost control of last week.

A car bomb exploded by the hotel in Bulo-burde where African Union (AU) and Somali officers were staying and gunfire continued for another five hours, witnesses said.

Six soldiers were killed, including a top Somali army commander, the AU said.

The al-Shabab Islamist group said it was behind the attack and that 30 AU and army officers had been killed.

A spokesman for the 22,000-strong AU force in Somalia (Amisom), Col Ali Adan Humad, said all the al-Shabab fighters involved in the raid had been killed, without specifying numbers.

Al-Shabab, which is linked to al-Qaeda, has waged an eight-year insurgency to overthrow the weak UN-backed government and create an Islamic state in Somalia. Key bridge

The BBC's Ibrahim Ade in the capital, Mogadishu, says al-Shabab had occupied Bulo-burde for more than five years.

The town, which has a strategic bridge over the River Shabelle and is at a crossroads linking various regions of the country, was an important base for al-Shabab.

Bulo-burde was captured as part of an ongoing AU and government offensive against al-Shabab, which controls much of south and central Somalia.

Communications to the central Hiran region went down not long after the fighting and gunfire in Bulo-burde ended, our reporter says.

Witnesses told the BBC the car blast at the hotel happened at 02:00 local time (23:00 GMT) and the fighting went on until about 07:00.

Col Humad said three Djiboutian soldiers and three Somali soldiers, including Col Mohamud Amin - the military commander of Hiran who was leading the offensive in the region - were killed.

Ten soldiers were also wounded, he said.

Earlier, Col Humad denied there were casualties when an Amisom convoy was attacked near its base in Arbiska outside Mogadishu.

Al-Shabab had released a statement saying that seven Burundian peacekeepers and five American nationals travelling in the vehicles were killed on Monday afternoon.

The al-Qaeda-linked group lost control of Mogadishu in 2011, but has intensified bombings and mortar raids in the city in recent weeks.

Last month, al-Shabab fighters stormed Villa Somalia, the seat of government in Mogadishu, killing at least 11 people.
